Orientation and mobility is provided by an orientation and mobility specialist. The training provided prepares a person who is blind to go out to new places and travel in various areas. Many blind pedestrians plan the routes then go out to new places and they assess the intersection and crossing when they arrive at it. O&M instruction in not available on an ‘on-call’ basis. People don’t get training for every route they may use and every street they may cross. Just like sighted pedestrians, they may have an appointment at a new place and call and get directions and travel to that location. They just take the bus rather than driving.

A typical orientation and mobility program for someone who has recently lost their vision is 6 months of daily instruction; classes are individual and lessons take place on the streets and sidewalks. However, for various reasons, not all people who need orientation and mobility receive instruction.
