There are two basic types of actuated signals, semi-actuated and fully actuated. Semi-actuated signals are commonly used when a major street intersects a minor street. There are detectors present on the minor street approaches only. The signal stays green for the major street unless vehicles are detected on the minor street. The illustration shows an intersection graphic with detector loops on the minor road legs.
