New types of APS have automatic volume adjustment. These are generally quieter signals supposed to be heard 6 to 12 feet from the pushbutton. It's important to recognize that pedestrians who are blind need to hear the traffic as well as the signal. The louder signal, to be heard across the street, or what is called audible beaconing, is to be used only if requested.
