Some agencies have developed modifications for certain locations as shown in the photos on this slide. The APS speakers are aimed out the rear of the device, assuming the device will be installed on a large pole which will reflect the sound back toward the waiting pedestrian. When installed on smaller poles, the sound was mainly projected behind the APS, toward the nearby stores and buildings and not very audible at the curb. An aluminum backplate was fabricated to direct the sound more toward the street and waiting pedestrians and away from the buildings.
